County briefed on disaster training

PARKSLEY -- Deputy Emergency Management Coordinator Sarah Seaman informed county supervisors last week about steps the Public Safety department has taken to help residents prepare for disasters -- including arranging for a countywide disaster recovery training exercise that will take place in September.

Bayshore cuts workforce

CAPE CHARLES -- Almost 80 workers at Bayshore Concrete Products Corp. here have been laid off in the past two weeks, with 30 or more of them going in the latest round of cuts last Wednesday, company President John Dobbs said Monday.

Coast Guard issues warning about illegal Charter Boats during Pony Swim

NORFOLK, VA -- The Coast Guard is cautioning tourists attending the pony swim in Chincoteague, Virginia on July 30th to avoid boats that do not have licensed captains, and in some cases have not been inspected by the Coast Guard.

Museum hosts painting workshops

The Oyster & Maritime Museum, located at 7125 Maddox Blvd., Chincoteague Island, VA , will host two free interactive acrylic painting workshops on Saturday, June 28 and Saturday, Aug, 2. Both workshops begin at 9 a.m. and run until noon.

Judge: Appeal doesn't stop tax collection

ACCOMAC -- A circuit judge Tuesday said an appeal to the tax levy order does not prevent Accomack County from collecting real-estate taxes or from using the money, but it does mean the county cannot enforce the levy until the case is resolved.

Onley, Accomack land talks break down

ONLEY -- A breakdown apparently has occurred in negotiations between the town of Onley and Accomack County about Onley's request to expand its boundaries.
